AND PROJECTS
The Friends
of Brooker Creek Preserve sponsors several events throughout the year.
We also provide financial and volunteer support for a variety of environmentally
related projects. Each of those events and projects is designed to enhance
public awareness of the natural environment that lies in the northeast

PROJECTS
Fri ends'
Nature Trail /Observation Platform - A self-guided
hiking trail was opened at the preserve
for public use. This 1 1/2 mile loop trail lies at the southern end of
Lora Lane off of Keystone Rd., about one-half mile east of East Lake Road.
To make the trail more hiker-friendly, the Friends constructed a wooden
footbridge over a small creek. In January 2001, we provided the materials
and volunteer support for the construction of a 10 x 12 foot observation
platform, just off the hiking trail. This area provides a view from which
visitors can observe a wetlands area that is used by many of the creatures
in the preserve. Park on the side of the road, pick up your map and guide,
and enjoy a walk at whatever pace suits your mood. The trail is opened
from sunrise to sunset 365 days a year.
In addition
to the Friends Trail, the preserve offers guided hikes every Saturday.
A reservation is required. For more information please call the preserve
at 727-453-6910.
Eagle Scout Project
Eagle
Scout, Mark Brandon, designed
a project to enhance the Friend's Hiking Trail. He constructed a sign
welcoming visitors to the trail and dedicating the trail to the Friends
of Brooker Creek Preserve. He also created numbered posts and pamphlets
so that hikers can identify various plants along the self-guided trail.
The board provided the funding for the materials he needed to do this.
The project was completed in February 2004; thank you, Mark!
